Третій період розвитку кафедри (1981-1987 рр.) пов’язаний з приходом на посаду завідувача кафедри доктора фізико-математичних наук І.М. Гранкіна. Як науковий керівник галузевої науково-дослідної лабораторії «Акустоелектроніка» (в складі КПІ), він привніс в учбові плани додаткові напрями, зв’язані з розвитком акустоелектронних пристроїв обробки сигналів на поверхневих акустичних хвилях. Виникла потреба в постановці відповідного нового учбового курсу та розширені тематичних розділів у суміжних курсах. З 1982 року кафедра стала називатися «Кафедрою акустики та акустоелектроніки». В цей час на кафедру прийшли працювати молоді викладачі випускники КПІ М.В. Родіонова, О.М. Петріщев.

Цей етап розвитку кафедри не тільки визначається своїми навчально-методичними розробками, але й співпадає із розробкою першого в СРСР цифрового гідроакустичного комплексу «Звезда», в розробці якого приймало участь багато випускників кафедри. Головним конструктором цього комплексу був випускник кафедри — Олег Михайлович Алещенко.

Приклад участі випускників кафедри в успішній розробці цифрового гідроакустичного комплексу «Звезда» свідчить про високу ефективність праці викладачів кафедри, що підготували висококваліфікованих інженерів.
