Народився Ілля Михайлович Гранкін 24 вересня 1931 року в сім’ї колгоспника міста Батайська Ростовської області. Рано втратив батька, 14-тирічним хлопчиськом переїхав жити до старшого брата в Одесу, де закінчив морс-хідне училище і працював диспетчером Керченського морського торговельного порту. В 1946 році став комсомольцем, у 1954 — був прийнятий до КПРС. Після закінчення вечірньої школи в 1953 році поступає вчитися до Київського держуніверситету ім. Т. Г. Шевченка за спеціальністю радіофізика. Після закінчення університету працював у спеціальному конструкторському бюро одного з київських підприємств.
З 1960 року після вступу до аспірантури життя і діяльність Іллі Михайловича були пов’язані з Київським політехнічним інститутом. Аспірант на кафедрі теоретичних основ радіотехніки, асистент кафедри, захист кандидатської дисертації в 1965 році, старший викладач кафедри ТОР, доцент кафедри конструювання та виробництва радіоапаратури, завідуючий кафедрою акустики і акустоелектроніки, захист докторської дисертації в 1989 році. Праця Іллі Михайловича Гранкіна на згаданих кафедрах багато в чому визначила їх науковий напрямок. Висока кваліфікація викладача, добре володіння англійською мовою дозволили йому працювати лек-тором і консультантом декана технічного факультету Айн-Шамського університету в Каїрі.
Крім викладацької, Ілля Михайлович проводив велику науково-дослідну роботу. Він — автор 150 праць в галузі електродинаміки, фізики феритів, техніки НВЧ, мікроелектроніки, а також ряду фундаментальних праць в галузі техніки поверхневих акустичних хвиль. Ілля Михайлович був членом секції «Мікроелектроиіка» міського управління НТО ім. А.С. Попова, вченим секретарем редколегії журналу «Известия вузов — радиоэлектроника», членом наукової ради АН СРСР із проблем «Ультразвук», У 1973 році створив і організував першу в інституті технологічну лабораторію мікроелектроніки, а в 1976 — першу в системі Мінвузу СРСР велику галузеву науково — дослідну лабораторію акустоелектроніки на Україні, Під час його роботи завідуючим кафедрою акустики і акустоелектроніки вперше в СРСР було розпочато цільову підготовку спеціалістів у галузі акустоелектроніки.
Університетські однокашники з великою теплотою до цього часу згадують його як лідера, організатора багатьох студентських справ. В колективі інституту Ілля Михайлович заслужено користувався авторитетом, як принципова і ділова людина. Оптиміст за натурою, з високим почуттям гумору, завжди жартом і добрим словом створював навколо себе здорову атмосферу, вмів вчасно прийти на допомогу, ніколи не ставив себе над іншими, був уважним до колег, для своїх молодих співробітників завжди був чуйним наставником.
Під керівництвом Іллі Михайловича Гранкіна, починаючи з 1977 року, були організовані і проводилися республіканські та всесоюзні науково-технічні конференції з акустоелектроніки. Під його науковим керівництвом захищені кандидатські дисертації. Більшість наукових розробок, виконаних І.М. Гранкіним та його колегами, впроваджені у виробництво на підприємствах республіки і країни.
Багато уваги він приділяв розвитку акустоелектроніки на Україні, зокрема, на київському НВО «Сатурн», Черкаському заводі «Імпульс», у Львівському науково-дослідному інституті. Під його безпосереднім керівництвом була створена лабораторія вимірювальних перетворювачів на основі техніки поверхневих акустичних хвиль. На підприємствах України й дотепер працюють кваліфіковані спеціалісти — учні Іллі Михайловича, продовжуючи розпочату ним справу.

Ilya Mikhailovich Grankin was born on September 24, 1931 in the family of a farmer of the city of Bataysk, Rostov region. Early lost his father, a 14-year-old boy moved to live to his elder brother in Odessa, where he graduated from the secondary school and worked as the dispatcher of the Kerch Sea Commercial Port. In 1946 he became a Komsomol, in 1954 – he was admitted to the CPSU. After graduating from the evening school in 1953 he enrolled in the Kyiv State University. T. G. Shevchenko in the specialty of radiophysics. After graduating from the university he worked in a special design bureau of one of the Kiev enterprises.
Since 1960, after joining the postgraduate studies, Ilya Mikhailovich’s life and activities were connected with the Kiev Polytechnic Institute. Postgraduate student at the department of theoretical fundamentals of radio engineering, assistant professor, defense of the candidate’s dissertation in 1965, senior lecturer of the department of TOR, associate professor of the department of designing and production of radio equipment, head of the department of acoustics and acoustoelectronics, defense of the doctoral dissertation in 1989. The work of Ilya Mikhailovich Grankin on the above departments has largely determined their scientific direction. Highly qualified teacher, fluent in English, allowed him to work as a lecturer and consultant at the Dean’s Technical Faculty of Ain-Sham University in Cairo.
In addition to the teaching staff, Ilya Mikhailovich carried out extensive research work. He is the author of 150 works in the field of electrodynamics, physics of ferrites, microwave engineering, microelectronics, as well as a number of fundamental works in the field of surface acoustic waves. Ilya Mikhailovich was a member of the section “Microelectroics” of the city management of the NTO them. AS Popova, a scientist secretary of the editorial board of the journal Izvestia of high schools – radioelectronics, a member of the scientific council of the USSR Academy of Sciences on the problems of “ultrasound”. In 1973, he created and organized the first laboratory of microelectronics in the institute, and in 1976 – the first in the system of the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR a large branch scientific – experimental laboratory of acoustoelectronics in Ukraine. During his work, the head of the department of acoustics and acoustoelectronics for the first time in the USSR began the targeted training of specialists in the field of acoustoelectronics.
University college students with great warmth still mention him as a leader, organizer of many student affairs. In the team of the Institute Ilya Mikhailovich deservedly enjoyed the authority, as a principal and business man. Optimist in nature, with a high sense of humor, always a joke and a good word created a healthy atmosphere around him, was able to help in time, never put himself above the others, was attentive to colleagues, for his young employees always been a sensitive mentor.
Under the direction of Ilya Mikhailovich Grankin, since 1977, Republican and All-Union scientific and technical conferences on acoustoelectronics were organized and held. Under his scientific guidance, candidate’s theses are protected. Most of the scientific developments performed by IM Grankin and his colleagues, introduced in production at the enterprises of the republic and the country.
He paid much attention to the development of acoustoelectronics in Ukraine, in particular, at the Kiev NGO “Saturn”, at the Cherkasy plant “Impulse”, at the Lviv Research Institute. Under his direct guidance, a laboratory of measuring transducers based on the technique of surface acoustic waves was created. Qualified specialists – students of Ilya Mikhailovich, working on the enterprises of Ukraine, are still working, continuing their work.
