Report from the meeting on “Open Doors”

We offer a few photos from the recent meetings of teachers of the department of acoustics and acoustoelectronics with future students.

The presiding chairman of the department, Professor Vitaliy Didkovskiy, began with a narrative about the directions of engineering research and scientific work of students – future bachelors and masters.

One of the areas of student and faculty research is to solve the difficult task of detecting and monitoring unmanned aerial vehicles, such as quadrackers.

At the meeting, the students of the department, Philip Larin and Andrei Kozak, accompanied the story of this task with the demonstration of the acoustic hardware-software they are developing.

Currently, they are able to calculate the spectral-correlation characteristics of noise signals from the quadcopter, which makes it possible to decide on the presence of the aircraft, and on the features of its behavior. The next step is to create and train artificial intelligence to automate the decision-making process.

Professor of the Department Arkady Nikolaevich Prodeus has demonstrated a number of examples of the use of digital processing of signals of speech and music signals. This is an improvement in the quality of speech and musical signals by suppressing the noise and reverb, and the various acoustic effects created with the help of vocoders – in particular, such a combination of language with music when it seems that a speaker is “singing”. In addition, examples of special distortion of voice, synthesis of signals for security devices (barking of a huge dog) are given.

Associate Professor Vitaliy Panetalievich Hare spoke about acoustic measurements in special blinded premises – acoustic chambers, the walls of which are coated with a thick layer of sound absorbing materials. In addition, he spoke about the calculation and creation of acoustic screens along intensive traffic tracks, which can substantially reduce the noise level near these tracks.

The meeting ended, but the students did not disagree for a long time, asked questions, were interested in various hardware devices, software.

What is acoustics?

The acoustic role of acoustics in the modern world is very well characterized by the well-known American acoustic scientist Bruce Lindsey (1964), a scheme known as the Lindsey Acoustic Wheel. Below, we present this scheme, adapted to the Ukrainian language and slightly modified in form (the original picture really has the shape of a wheel). However, the content of the “Lindsey Wheels” is completely preserved.

As you can see, in the “Wheel of Lindsey” identified four areas of human activity, in which acoustic knowledge are important: Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Art. The central place in this chart is the fundamental research in acoustics, which is united by the general name – physical acoustics.

Briefly about the Chair of Acoustics and Acoustoelectronics:

The chair was founded in 1936.
Over the past years, about 4,000 specialists in the field of acoustics have been trained. 5 pupils of the department were awarded the State Prizes. Among the graduates of the department are 2 academicians, 12 doctors of sciences and more than 60 candidates of sciences. The training of specialists is carried out using modern educational programs and computer technologies.

Students’ training is carried out in specialized laboratories and auditoriums of the department.
Future specialists receive practical experience at enterprises and research institutes. Students’ training is provided by 12 candidates and 7 doctors of technical sciences. Studying at the department, students have the opportunity, in parallel with the basic education, to obtain a second higher education in the NTUU “KPI” in the areas of management, marketing, business economics, economic security, and others.

At the stage of undergraduate and master’s studies, students study basic academic disciplines (mathematics, physics, mechanics, computer science, programming, engineering and computer graphics, disciplines of the humanities, etc.), as well as professionally-oriented disciplines of acousto-electronic profile (theory of electric circuits, bases electronics, theory of processes and systems, theoretical basis of acoustics, applied acoustics, analog and digital circuitry, electroacoustic converters, measurement on sound and ultrasonic stotah et al.).

Students learn to use software tools for processing acoustic signals and images, simulation of measuring loudspeakers, as well as designing acoustic devices and systems. Particular attention is devoted to the design of measuring and diagnostic instruments, the development of acoustic equipment, equipment for home and professional sound recording studios, ultrasound computer systems for introscopy and tomography, etc.

Graduates of the department, specializing in “Acoustic multimedia technologies and systems”, have professional training for the technical support of musical and linguistic programs, for the acoustic design of sound recording studios, cinema concert halls, theaters, etc. Specialists in the field of ultrasonic introscopy are using their knowledge in various branches of the national economy, including in the study of the physical and mechanical properties of materials and structures, in defectoscopy of products and mechanisms, designing, exploitation tion and repair of ultrasonic medical devices for the diagnosis of human health, therapeutic ultrasound devices, devices for the diagnosis of hearing loss, digital hearing aids and others.

Specialization “Acoustic monitoring, bio- and psychoacoustics” is primarily devoted to solving the problems of the emergence, transmission and perception of sounds. It includes musical acoustics, which studies the creation of musical sounds (acoustics of musical instruments, acoustics of speech and singing, electroacoustics); the transmission of sounds (architectural acoustics, audio coding in transmission channels) and the perception of sound (psychoacoustics – acoustics of hearing). As part of psychoacoustics, students learn fundamentally new ways of working with sound through computer music technology; develop acoustic systems, create new means of transmitting spatial sound information for digital broadcasting, television, and sound recording.

The main places for employment of graduates are: the National Radio and Television Company of Ukraine UT-1, ICTV, K-1, Culture, STB and others, the apparatus of the Supreme Council of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine, NTC. Antonova, OJSC Ukrtelecom, Kyiv Research Institute of Hydraulic Devices, LLC Ultracon-Service, Prompribor, State Research Institute of Building Structures, Institute of Hydromechanics, State Enterprise «Ukrmetrteststandart», Institute of Materials Science named after.
